“You Reminded Me I’m Not Alone”: Jasmine’s Story
Every day, up to 300 households walk through the doors of the Action Center - each one carrying their own story, their own challenges. Some are facing food insecurity, others are overwhelmed by rising costs or unexpected emergencies. No matter the situation, we don’t just see the crisis - we see the person.
When Jasmine** (**name changed for privacy) first reached out to us, she was exhausted. Her pantry was nearly empty, her energy bill was overdue, and she was new to Colorado without a support system. “I felt like I was failing at everything,” she told us. “I was doing everything I could, but it just wasn’t enough.”
She signed up for a Financial Health Conversation, unsure of what to expect. What started as a simple request for guidance quickly became something more. As we talked, it became clear that Jasmine’s needs were deeper than she had let on. She was visibly underweight, and she shared that her doctor had recently diagnosed her with severe malnourishment—her body was dangerously low on iron, magnesium, and potassium.
We acted quickly. Jasmine was welcomed into our self-select grocery and walk-up food services, where she chose fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins - foods that would help her begin to heal. Jasmine began using the Action Center’s Market more regularly, “Getting connected to the Action Center when I did literally saved my life! I can’t thank you all enough for all you have done and the many kindnesses I have received” she said.
With the support of our family coaches, Jasmine also applied for utility assistance through Energy Outreach Colorado, which helped her avoid a shutoff. She received help applying for SNAP benefits, giving her a more stable way to keep food on the table.
“I finally felt like I could breathe again,” Jasmine said. “You didn’t just help me - you reminded me that I’m not alone.”
Her story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when people are met with compassion, dignity, and real support. At the Action Center, we believe that everyone deserves access to food, clothing, and the chance to move forward - especially in moments of crisis.
